I have followed the events that have transpired since the death of Trayvon Martin, as I’m sure many of you have. President Obama said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. Of course, the media took that and twisted it every which way but loose. As a young, black, school aged boy being raised in a middle class family, my son had that look too. Now as a college student almost 22 years old, my son continues to be at risk of racial profiling simply because he is a young, black man. As a mother and a concerned citizen, the state of this judicial system and the state of race relations is very disturbing especially in this current year of 2012.
This very sad situation has brightened the spotlight on our judicial system as well as the fate of our Black men. Is this another step in the slow motion genocide of the black race?
A Child’s Cry
A mother knows her child’s cry. Yes, the audio forensics analysis may be necessary as part of the process of gathering evidence to obtain an arrest warrant and ultimately a conviction; however, the analysis is not necessary for a mother to recognize the cry of her child. Trayvon’s mother stated that she knows it was her son’s voice on 911 recording crying for help. A mother knows.
Trayvon’s mother buried her son following the tragic circumstances of his death. She has stated that until his murderer is brought to justice, she cannot eat, sleep, or relax. Not until the man who murdered her son is arrested.
We must stand with her by doing all that we can to stand for justice and fight for improved race relations. Within our homes, within our churches, within our communities, within our country, we must take a stand. We must love, educate, and provide a firm foundation for our sons and daughters.
